The EMG/NCV is a test commonly ordered and performed by neurologists. It is a testing modality which has been in clinical use for more than 50 years and continues to remain quite valuable. The test consists of two parts. In the first part, the nerves are electrically stimulated by electrodes placed on the skin. Their responses are measured, both for sensory and motor function. Usually only a sampling of nerves are tested, geared specifically towards the patient's complaint. In the second part, tiny needles are placed into a few muscle groups, and the function of those muscles are measured. The test takes between 30 and 60 minutes, and although mildly uncomfortable, it should not be painful. The test is of great value in detecting the presence of disorders of the nerves and muscles. It can be used to diagnose many conditions such as neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, and myopathy to name a few.
