Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This refers to a disease process in which
the median nerve is injured as it passes into the wrist. It is a very
common condition that occurs at all ages. There is a tendency for it to
occur in persons who perform repetitive activities with their hands and
fingers (i.e. typing)
It tends to present insidiously with
numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands and wrists. Left untreated it
may progress to debilitating pain, swelling, and muscular \weakness in the
fingers.
The neurologist can diagnose this condition
with careful examination techniques, including the use of electromyography
and nerve conduction studies.
Treatment may be medical or surgical and
often leads to good results.
