Encephalopathy

This is a non-specific word that means dysfunction of the brain.  It is something that comes up primarily in the in-patient setting.  When a patient is very sick and hospitalized, and in particular, elderly, they may become quite confused and agitated.

A neurologist is often called upon to rule out other causes ffor this state, and in the end the diagnosis of encephalopathy may be made.

This condition is usually self-limited and resolves with supportive care and some tranquilizing medications.
