Meningitis
The coverings of the brain and spinal cord are called the meninges.
Inflammation of the meninges is referred to as meningitis.
Meningitis if most often caused by a virus or a bacteria. The classic
presentation includes such features as a headache, stiff neck, photophobia
(light bothering the eyes), fever and sometimes a change in the person’s
level of consciousness.
Meningitis is one of the few neurological emergencies. It can only be
diagnosed by a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) – a procedure most often
performed by a neurologist. Treatment often includes antibiotics and close
contacts may at times require preventative therapy.
